Rachel Reid Turner
(November 24, 1926 - October 13, 2013)
Rachel Virginia Reid Turner born November 24, 1926 passed away Sunday morning, October 13, 2013 at the age of 86. Rachel was the 5th of 8 children of George Henry Washington Reid and Sarah Ethel May Shoaf. She was raised in Reedy Creek. At 18, she went to work as a switchboard operator at the Robert E Lee Hotel in Winston-Salem where she met life long friend, Wanda Kuntsler. Her ambition was to travel and see the world, so while still in her teens, she applied for and got a job with Marquell Service as an undercover investigator for passenger bus lines. The job took her by bus to most of the states in the US. In her early 20’s, Rachel joined the US Navy where she met and married Bob Turner at the Charleston Naval Station. Their first son, Bobby, was born in Charleston. Rachel left active duty in the Navy and followed her husband to Europe where she and her son took apartments in Italy, France and Spain where they waited for Bob’s ship to make port calls. In 1953 they moved to Brazil where daughter Robin and son Pat were born. Back in the US, Rachel raised 3 small children in Yppsilanti, Michigan while her husband received his bachelors degree from UM. After a brief posting in Athens, GA, Rachel packed up her family for a 2 year posting to Yokohama, Japan. Duty stations that followed were: Charleston, SC, Mayport, FL, Athens, GA (second time), Chinhae, South Korea and Charleston, SC (third time). Rachel came back to her roots, moving back to the Reedy Creek area in 1986. She was an avid reader, excellent cook and skilled gardener. Her friends and family will remember her for the laughing lilt to her voice, her positive attitude and her ebullient spirit. She leaves sons, Bob Turner of Ridgeway, CO (Althea, daughter-in-law and Breeze, granddaughter) Patrick Turner of French Quarter, St. Martin F. W.I. (Tracy, daughter-in-law and Alexi, granddaughter) and daughter, Robin Sweatman (Richard, son-in-law) of Reedy Creek, sisters, Kathryn Forrest of Winston-Salem, Pansie Trantham of Welcome, Christine Darnell of Welcome and nieces and nephews, too numerous to mention. Rachel was preceded in death by husband, Lt.Cdr. Robert Lee Turner.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to her beloved church, Good Hope United Methodist Church, 10253 Hampton Road, Lexington, NC 27295.
