Agnes Ednora Essick Adkins

Mrs. Agnes Ednora Essick Adkins, 92, of Lexington Health Care Center in Lexington, formerly of Salem Road, went on to her heavenly reward on Friday evening September 8, 2006. Mrs. Adkins had been a resident of Lexington Health Care Center since March 6, 2006. Agnes Adkins was born April 28, 1914 in High Point, the oldest daughter of Girla Lily Kinney Essick and Arlie Luther Essick. As a child, she moved with her family to Lexington and then to Welcome where she was a lifelong resident. She retired from Erlanger Cotton Mill and was a homemaker. On August 30, 1930, Mrs. Adkins was married to Calvin James Adkins who preceded her in death on May 19, 1986. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her four sons: Calvin James (Jim) Atkins in 2003, Henry Luther Adkins in 2003, Bobby Joe Adkins in 2004 and Larry Adkins in 1995. A sister, Mintie Everhart; a brother, Arlie Luther (A.L.) and an infant brother, Winfred. A grandson, Joey Adkins and a granddaughter, Natalie Adkins. Bethesda United Methodist Church in Welcome has been her church home most all her life. Mrs. Adkins was the oldest member of Bethesda, where she taught the Ladies Adult Sunday School Class for many years. She also taught a Ladies Bible Class and was a member of the United Methodist Women’s Society where she received the lifetime membership pin. She loved her church and church family and she faithfully attended as long as her health permitted. Mrs. Adkins is survived by her sisters: Arwilda Everhart and Freda Shoaf and husband Glenn; her brothers: Bill Essick and wife Frances, Reuben Essick and wife Betty, and Ralph Essick and wife Evelyn, all of Welcome. A sister-in-law, Mildred Essick of Arcadia. Her special daughters- in- law, Frances Atkins of Midway and Doris Adkins of Welcome. Eleven grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at 4:00 p.m. Monday, September 11, 2006 at Bethesda United Methodist Church in Welcome by the Reverend Doug Hochmuth. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, September 10, 2006 from 6 until 8:00 p.m. at Davidson Funeral Home, 858 Hickory Tree Road and at others times at the home of Doris Adkins, 1336 Craver Road. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Bethesda United Methodist Church, Bethesda Family Life Center Fund, 2922 Bethesda Road, Lexington, N.C. 27295.
