Alan Taylor Bagby

January 7, 1946 — December 30, 2019

Alan Taylor Bagby, 73, of Lexington passed away on Monday, December 30, 2019 at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00pm on Friday, January 3, 2020 at the Davidson Funeral Home Chapel in Lexington with Dr. Lee Zehmer officiating the service.  A family graveside burial will take place next week at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, KY.

Visitation with family and friends will be held from 2:30 until 3:30pm prior to the service at the funeral home.

Alan was born on January 7, 1946 in Mecklenburg County to Richard Caldwell Bagby, Sr. and Charlene Snyder Bagby.  He retired from his most recent job as a mechanic but also taught high school industrial arts for Lexington City Schools before leaving to run his own business.  Alan proudly served our country in the United States Air Force.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jan Summers.

Alan led a simple life devoted to helping others.  He never came across an item he couldn’t fix and enjoyed repairing things for people often without accepting any money.  His passion was collecting things “you never know when you might need” and could often be found browsing aisles looking for “bargains.”

His life was devoted to Lexington and Davidson County.  After moving around as a child his family settled in Lexington, living in a home on Sunrise Avenue plus others located in the County.  After serving in the Air Force during the Vietnam War he settled into a home originally built by his father where he lived for 49 years.

During those 49 years the Lexington Senior High graduate returned to his alma mater as a teacher.  He left teaching to pursue a career as a self-employed businessman, founding Bagby Services in 1981.  Mainly focusing on Alarm Systems and Commercial Refrigeration in the beginning, his company evolved into a general mechanical fix-it business.  Alan’s passion for helping others often superceded his business sense as many customers failed to receive invoices for work.

Along with his love of helping others, Alan had a special place in his heart for animals. In his later years cats were his main passion.  He routinely had several at any one time often naming them by numbers or acronyms.

Those left to cherish his memory include son, Rick Bagby (Jennifer) of Seneca, SC; daughter, Lori Little, of Durham; brother, Richard Caldwell Bagby, Jr. of Mississippi; 3 grandchildren, Kenan Little, Payton Bagby, Taylor Bagby; and special friend Marian Van Zant of Lexington.

Alan was a no-frills gentleman and requested that his service be a ‘no coat and tie’ service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Humane Society of Davidson County, PO Box 1791, Lexington, NC 27293 or Cancer Services of Davidson County, 25 W. 6 th Avenue, Lexington, NC 27292.
