Alta Leonard Merritt

Alta Leonard Merritt, age 100 of Grayson Creek of Welcome, formerly of North Leonard Road, Lexington passed away Friday morning, January 29, 2016 at Grayson Creek. A funeral service will be at 3:00 pm Tuesday February 2, 2016 at Center United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Stephen Pillsbury and burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 pm prior to the service at the church. Mrs. Merritt was born May 18, 1915 in Davidson County to Homer Leonard and Cornelia Bates Leonard . She was retired from Dixie Furniture and a member of Center United Methodist Church. She graduated from Welcome High School. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Betty Myers, two grandchildren, Scott Holt and Karen Stephens, brothers, Blake, Joe, J.W., Coy, Lee, John, Tommy and Homer Ray Leonard and sisters, Edna Twyne, Mary Leonard and Sadie Leonard. Surviving are her daughters, Carthena Holt and Ponzi Zimmerman both of Lexington. A sister, Naomi Algood of Winston Salem. Also surviving are grandchildren: Tara Wood (Dan), Starr Hill (Mike), Sandra Norris, Tiffany Draughn, Pamela Pack and Ricky Myers: several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
