Arlin Briggs

Arlin Ivey Briggs, 92, of East Old Highway 64, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, at High Point Regional Hospital. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Becks Lutheran Church by the Revs. Ray and Ruth Ann Sipe. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Briggs was born Dec. 11, 1915, to Ivey Lee Briggs and Addie Mae Burkhart Briggs. He graduated from Davis Townsend School and was the owner and operator of Ivey Briggs Service and Garage. Mr. Briggs was one of the founders of the Central Fire Department, and he served as the first chief. He was also a member and past president of the Central Lions Club, participated in Senior Olympics and was a former Boy Scout and Explorer leader. He was an avid photographer, coastal fisherman, craftsman, basket maker, and enjoyed cooking. He was a lifelong member of Becks Lutheran Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and on the church council and the cemetery committee. He was also a member of the Young at Heart group. His wife, Paige Veasey Briggs, preceded him in death. He is survived by his son, Roger Briggs, and his wife, Virginia Faust, of Hendersonville; his sisters, Ruby Delk Harris, Lena Briggs Beck, Edith Briggs Honeycutt, and Wilma Briggs Byerly, all of Lexington; and two grandsons, Michael Allen Briggs of Hendersonville, and Byron Graves Briggs of Warren County. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Davidson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Becks Lutheran Church Building Fund, 441 Becks Church Road, Lexington, NC 27292.
