Arvil Wilson Burkhart

Arvil Wilson Burkhart, 90, of Morgan Drive, died Sunday, December 27, 2009, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at Grace Alliance Church, where he was a member, with the Revs. Ron Wellner and Roy Solvig officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Burkhart was born April 15, 1919, in Davidson County to Jacob Hiram Burkhart and wife, Quinnie Elizabeth Younts Burkhart. He had attended Sandy Grove School and Davis Townsend School. He was a member of the Bounders United, sheriff of the Carolina Guroos, and a member of the Over the Hill Coffee Club. He was former member of the Civitans Club and sheriff of Davidson County Bicentennials. He was a general contractor and later became co-owner of Morgan’s Inc., where he worked until his retirement. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Earl and Gilbert Burkhart; and two sisters, Savannah Burkhart and Lystra Workman. Surviving are his wife, Mary Helen Morgan Burkhart of the home; three children by a previous marriage, Sheila Cannon and husband, Homer, of Salisbury, Sharon Smith of Lexington, Artie Burkhart and wife Georgeanna of Lexington; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one stepson, Kenneth J. McCrary and wife, Betty, of Lexington; and a sister, Mary Ellen Heitman and husband, Vernon. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.
