Audrey Carter James

Audrey Carter James, 93 of Perryman Road passed away Thursday, June 23, 2011 shortly after noon at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Good Hope United Methodist Church where Audrey was a member, conducted by Rev. Chris Bennett. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Good Hope United Methodist Church and other times at 1227 Perryman Road, Lexington. Audrey was born in Davie County on September 23, 1917 to Thomas W. Carter and Adelia Haneline Carter. Audrey was a beloved and devoted mother and caregiver to her children and to her extended family. She raised three generations of her children and grandchildren, and treasured all of them as the loves of her life. Audrey was devoted to Christ and enjoyed spending hours each day later in life reading the Bible. From her youth she was active in Church as a Sunday School teacher and member of the Methodist Women. She enjoyed traveling and cooking with friends and family, and was known for her desserts and chocolate pies. Her recipes were complied in a published cookbook devoted to her distinctive cooking, American Country Dessert Recipes. She was a blessed source of patience, calm, and love to all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents, and also by her husband Virgil L. James, a son Ardell James; three sisters and their husbands Lera Marshall (Thomas), Ruby James (Percy) and Laura Lee Robertson (Arnold); son-in- law Kyle Johnson and one granddaughter Angie Jarrell. Surviving are three sons, Bill James of New York, Butch James & wife Judi, Kim James & wife Jayne all of Lexington; two daughters, Madge Johnson of Lexington, Adelia Horton & husband Roger of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Todd James, Elizabeth James, Luke James and Matt Horton; two great-grandchildren, Michael and Melissa Jarrell. Memorials donations for Audrey may be made to Good Hope United Methodist Church Building Fund, 10253 Hampton Road, Lexington, N.C. 27295 or Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to John Wayne and Janie Walser, Linda Scott, Jennifer Scott and Dr. William Folds for the loving care they provided to our mother. Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel is assisting the family.
