Avon Cregg Mize

Avon Cregg Mize, 88, of Lexington, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.

Mr. Mize will lie-in-state from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 7, 2025 at Davidson Funeral Home in Lexington. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2025 at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel with Rev. Dr. Ray Howell officiating. Burial will be privately held.

Avon was born on January 14, 1937 in Davidson County, NC to the late Albert Jackson Mize and Josie Catherine Hoffman Mize. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carol Jolee Groth Mize, four brothers, and one sister.

Avon honorably served his country in the United States Army. He further served his community as a Police Officer for the Lexington Police Department from 1970 to 1988.  He went on to work as a lab courier at Forsyth Medical Center and was a well-known friendly clerk at the ABC Store. In his free time, he loved to spend time outside and especially enjoyed mowing the grass. He and his wife Carol loved to travel and take trips together. He was dedicated to his health and looked forward to going to the YMCA every day. He was a faithful and long-time member of First Baptist Church of Lexington, where he often served as an usher. He was also a passionate supporter for the Davidson County Humane Society and Hospice of Davidson County and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Most of all, he was a loving and caring husband, father, and grandfather and will be missed by all who knew him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Kelley Mize (Dion Casto) and Julie Mize; Step-daughter, Sharon Long (John); step-son, Andrew Lohr; brother, Ted Mize; grandchildren, Blake Boatwright (Victoria), Bret Boatwright (Ragan), and Zoey Mize, and great-granddaughter, Georgia Mae Boatwright.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Davidson County Humane Society, 1120 Piedmont Drive, Lexington, NC 27295 or to Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292.
