Barbara Jean Williford Wood, 78, of Happy Hollow Court, Lexington died Thursday, August 6, 2015 at WFBH-Lexington Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Monday, August 10, 2015 at Reeds United Methodist Church with Rev. Duncan Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 am at the church just prior to the service and other times at the home.
Mrs. Wood was born July 12, 1937 in Wake County to Isaac Abraham Williford and Bonnie Inez Stewart Williford. She was a loving mother and granny who gave of herself to others in all she did. Mrs. Wood retired from United/Burlington Furniture after 25 years of service as a supervisor of data processing. She was a member of Reeds United Methodist Church and Treasure of the church for 30 years, active choir member and served with Meals on Wheels. Barbara Wood worked tirelessly to ensure that rural areas of Lexington received communications services equal to those that residents of urban areas received. She faithfully represented members of Piedmont telephone and the merged companies of Piedmont Telephone and Surry Telephone for 22 years.
Barbara was very committed to the Carolina-Virginia Telephone Membership Association where she served in many leadership positions on various committees during her time with the association. Barbara served as an officer for 6 years on the executive committee and was president of the association from 2005-2007.
Barbara represented Piedmont and Surry Telephone as a member of the NTCA which is an organization of small rural telecommunications providers for many years.
Barbara first served on the nominating committee for Piedmont Telephone and then served as Director and President of the Piedmont Telephone Board and as a member of the Surry Telephone Board.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Dwight Wood; a daughter, Bonnie Ruth Wood, a brother, John Williford, and a son in law Glenn William Huffman.
Surviving are a daughter, Beverly Huffman of Lexington; three grandchildren, Damon William Huffman and wife Joy, Jason Dwight Huffman and companion Cheyenne Carter, Ashley Jean Swiney; 5 Great Grandchildren, McKenzie, Grace, Isaac, Anderson, Jayce; a sister-in-law, Brenda Williford of Dunn, NC; nieces, Lisa Krutz, Melinda Kosares, Kaye Hoerig, and Wanda Philligin; nephews, Michael Hollingsworth, and Tommy Lee; and a cousin, Robert West and wife Peggy.
