It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bernard Gail Leonard, who departed this life on March 7, 2026, in Lexington, North Carolina, at the age of 85.

Bernard was born on July 3, 1940, in North Carolina to the late Norman and Edna (Curry) Leonard. He graduated from North Davidson High School in 1958 and went on to build a fulfilling career as a machinist, retiring from RJR after more than three decades of dedicated service.

Bernard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruby (Walser) Leonard. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Bryce Leonard, Larry Leonard, and Kenneth Leonard; and his sisters, Virginia Sowers (“Tommy”), Ruby Walser (“Donald”), Katie Leonard and his precious Fur Buddy Max.

Outside of his career, Bernard found great joy in working the land. He loved farming, caring for his cows, and spending time outdoors. Known for his warmth, kindness, and strong work ethic, Bernard was deeply loved by family and friends. He was a devoted father figure and someone many people could count on.

He is survived by his daughter, Melinda Leonard; his sister, Patricia Perryman (“Jimmy”); sisters-in-law Libby Leonard, Ann Leonard, and Gayle Moorefield; brother-in-law Ralph Walser; his aunt, Paige Bailey; special great-nephews Cody and Trevor Musgrave; a host of nieces and nephews; his best friend and fishing buddy, Randy Estep.

Bernard’s legacy of love, hard work, and devotion will forever be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A memorial service to celebrate Bernard’s life will be announced at a later date.
