Betsy Voyles

Elizabeth P. “Betsy” Voyles, 77, of Old Salisbury Road, died Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Hinkle Hospice House. The funeral will be 4:00PM Wednesday at Linwood United Methodist Church where she was a member, conducted by the Revs Renee Easter, Benny Clodfelter. Visitation will be from 3PM to 4PM prior to the service in the sanctuary. Ms. Voyles was born December 23, 1935, in Davidson County, North Carolina to Thurman Palmer and Nellie Snider Palmer. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband James T. “Big Jim” Voyles, Sr.; son James T. Voyles, Jr.; and daughter Debra Voyles. Ms. Voyles took great pride in being the eldest grandchild in the R. Lee and Amanda S. Palmer family, attending the Sharp family reunions at Jersey Baptist Church, and being a big sister to her only brother (Dick). She also loved animals, rescuing and providing a loving home for at least 9 cats and dogs through the years. She was an active member of the Linwood United Methodist Church and sang in the choir even after being confined to a wheelchair. In the early years of her 58 year marriage, she moved frequently in support of Big Jim’s work. Their travels took them many places, but she was most fond of their days in Key West, Florida. Ms. Voyles worked in the offices of Link Taylor Furniture for many years and re-located to Lexington Home Brands from which she retired. Ms. Voyles was a founding member of the Red Velvet Cupcakes, a chapter of the International Redhat Society. Her passing comes in conjunction with two of her most loved events, the Lexington BBQ Festival and Halloween. Surviving are her daughter Ann Crotts and husband Danny of Lexington, grandchildren; Tiffany Childers of Lexington, and Jessica Reynolds (Chris) of Pleasant Garden, NC, great-grandchildren; Eva and Gabriel of Lexington and Salem of Pleasant Garden, brother; Richard “Dick” Palmer (Wendy) of Advance, NC, and a nephew; Richard Palmer Jr. of Raleigh, NC. The family wishes to thank Sue L. Voyles for her lifelong sister-like friendship and love for Ms. Voyles. They also wish to express gratitude to Judy and Barbara for making Ms. Voyles’ final days comfortable and entertaining. Memorials may be made to Linwood United Methodist Church, P.O.
