Betty (Harker) Bailey Merrill, age 83 passed away Friday, January 22, 2010 at Britthaven of Davidson with her family by her side. Betty was born on June 25, 1926 in Newark, New Jersey to William and Lily (Burrows) Harker. She was a longtime resident of South Burlington and Williston, and a retired executive secretary for the City of South Burlington, having retired in 1989. She was member of the First Congregational Church of Burlington, Temple Chapter #75, O. E. S. and SICA Court #38, LOSNA. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, William H. Bailey, and second husband, Edward F. Merrill, Sr.
Surviving are two daughters, E. Jean Batten and husband Kevin of Winston Salem, NC and Carolyn Stough and husband Paul of Welcome, NC; seven grandchildren, Leigh Ann McBurney, Kimberly Stough Weidman, Abby G. Batten, Paul Stough, III, Deborah Stough, Patricia Parker and Dawn Stough; ten great-grandchildren, Dylan, William, Kaitlyn and Michael McBurney, Logan Piazza and Ella Weidman, Cory Sterling, Amanda Riley, Brittany and Jessica Stough; sisters-in-law, Joyce Gilliam of Carlsbad, CA and Lois Taylor of Taunton, MA; several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of Britthaven of Davidson and Hospice of Davidson County for their care and kindness during Betty’s illness.
A celebration of Betty’s life will take place in Burlington in the spring with internment at Lakeview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be directed to Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292
