Betty Roberts Leonard

December 18, 1927 — October 29, 2020

  • On the evening of Thursday, October 29, 2020, Betty Roberts Leonard, 92, of Lexington, NC, took the hand of Jesus and was led to her eternal home.

Born in Leesville, Louisiana on December 18, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Johnnie R. Roberts and Verna Lamberth Roberts.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Howard Taft Leonard Sr; son, Howard “Butch” Taft Leonard Jr; brothers, James Roberts, Nathan Roberts, David Roberts, Donley Roberts, Merle Roberts and JC Roberts; and sisters, Dora Glaze, Nancy Drake, and Nora Bell Roberts.

Other than being a homemaker, she worked for Harris Teeter.  Crafts were her passion, especially sewing and crocheting.  She also enjoyed teaching others how to use their hands to make beautiful things.  She was an excellent cook and loved to piddle in the garden.  If you knew her, I’m sure you’d agree, she’ll be most remembered as being a kind and gentle soul who simply loved everyone.

Left to cherish her precious memories are granddaughters, Cecilia Leonard (Brian) of Lexington, Genevieve Ireland (Chad) of Lexington; great-grandchildren, Zachary Purdue, Carissa Ireland, and Caden Ireland; brother, AC Roberts (Mary) of Alabama; and several nieces and nephews.

All are welcome to attend a graveside service at 3:00pm on Monday, November 2nd at Lexington City Cemetery.  Betty will lie in state at Davidson Funeral Home in Lexington on Monday from 12:00pm until 2:00pm.  Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, those attending should practice social distancing and wear a face cover.

A special “thank you” to Trellis Hospice and also to the wonderful ladies who loved and cared for grandmother over the years.  We can never thank you enough.
