It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Betty Saunders Southern, who peacefully departed this world on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at Novant Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Born in Guilford County on November 24, 1954, to William Laverne Saunders and Nancy Ann Winfrey Saunders, Betty lived a life filled with warmth, kindness, and a deep love for her family. She dedicated her professional life to HomeTrust as a bank teller.
Betty's journey through life was marked by her unwavering dedication and the simple joys she found in everyday moments. We celebrate the essence of Betty and the impact she had on those around her. Her heart belonged to her grandchildren. The love she shared with them was a testament to her nurturing spirit and the joy she found in family connections. She was a beacon of warmth, always ready with a smile and a listening ear. She was preceded in death by a grandchild, Brennan Coleman.
Betty's memory will forever be cherished by her loved ones. She is survived by her beloved husband, James Chatman, of the home; daughter JoAnn Smith (Tommy) of Lexington; three grandchildren Justin, Jacob and Jerod Orrell and four great-grandchildren Braelee, Jayce, Brooklyn and Kinzie. Sisters Ann Ayers (Billy) and Jo Killian (Tim). Betty's legacy of love and devotion will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
