Bill Mode

February 16, 1936 — June 5, 2026

Lexington

Buren Lee Mode ,90, of Lexington, North Carolina passed away on June 5, 2026. He was born on February 16, 1936 in Cleveland County, NC to the late Buren Alston and Delphia Hulsey Mode. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Doris Ann Mode.

He is survived by his children Dale Mode of Lexington, NC and Wanda Morhard and husband Keith of Charlotte, NC. Bill was blessed with three grandchildren, Victoria (Tori) Lowe of Taylorsville, NC, Michael Morhard and wife Jamie of Columbia, SC and Kelly LaPiana and husband Ben of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. He was also blessed with ten great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Charles Mode and wife Mary Ann and his sister Freida Phillips and husband Keith; both of Lexington, NC. Bill was the oldest son of twelve siblings.

Bill grew up on a farm in Cleveland County in Shelby, NC. He would recount stories of walking “a hundred miles behind two mules plowing the fields”. As the oldest son his father Alston relied on him to help from an early age

Bill met the love of his life, Doris Blankenship, at the baseball fields in Lexington. He came home that night and told his mother “I met the girl I am going to marry tonight”. Bill and Doris married in 1955. Bill cherished and cared for Doris until she passed in 2011.

Bill spent most of his career with Binnings Building products where he worked as the plant manager for 42 years. He retired from Binnings in 2001.

Bill was an outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. During deer season venison was always on the menu. In his later years he would put out corn and watch the deer and other animals come in on his trail cameras.

He was also an avid golfer. Every week he and his friends would have the first tee time on Saturday at Sapona Country Club. Bill was an “A” player and won the club championship there one year. Every year he loved to plan a trip with his friends to Myrtle Beach for a week of golf.

Bill had a great group of friends that he would meet with at “Pup’s” shop. He would hang out catching up on the latest news and telling stories.

As he got older, he would visit with his neighbor/friend. She had four puppies and he got a lot of enjoyment from “taking care of the puppies” while she was at work or away. Bill’s life centered around family and friends and they were his greatest joy.
