Mr. William Edward (Bill) Niven, age 87 of Lantern Lane Lexington NC died Wednesday, August 19 at Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington. Mr. Niven was the retired Superintendent of the Lexington City School System.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, August 22 at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Jamey Armstrong and Rev. Doug Rowe. Mr. Niven requested his cremains be scattered in the Memorial Grove at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The family will see friends from 12:30 until 1:30 PM Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home.
Mr. Niven was born January 13, 1928 in Anson County to Thomas Leitch Niven and Emily Pipkin Niven. He was a graduate of Morven High School, a World War II Veteran of the U S Navy. He graduated from Western Carolina University and received his Masters degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a life Member of UNC-CH Alumni Association. He was Past President of the Yanceyville, NC Rotary Club and a Past President of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce. He had been a member of the Lexington Kiwanis Club. Mr. Niven had served as the Associate Superintendent of the Caswell County School System, and had been a coach, teacher and Principal of the Bartlett Yancey High School. He had also been Principal of the D. Matt Thompson Junior High School in Statesville. He played semi-pro baseball and was a pitcher with the Wilmington Pirates. He was a lifelong athlete, sports enthusiast, avid golfer and Tar Heel Fan. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and by a sister Sarah Niven Moore.
He is survived by his wife Georgia Niven of the home; a daughter Patricia Niven Crowell and husband Frank of Lewisville; a son, Kenneth E Niven and wife Patty of Plano, Texas; grandchildren, Autumn Stallings of Dallas, Texas, Christopher Niven of Plano, Texas, Ryan Niven of Charleston, SC, Kathryn Crowell of Winston-Salem and Samuel Crowell of Charlotte; 2 great grandchildren.
