Mr. Robert Earl Smith, 74, of Dover Road, died Sunday, May 6, at his home after declining health. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 12, at First United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Kelley Groce. The family will receive friends following the memorial service in the Church Fellowship Hall. Mr. Smith was born September 9, 1937 in Mt. Holly, NJ to Charles E. and Virginia Hansel Smith Smith. He was a graduate of George Washington University, where he was a phenomenal baseball player. He also played for the Philadelphia Phillies’ AAA minor league team. He later received a Master’s Degree from the University of Maryland and was a Veteran of the US Air Force. He retired from the Prince George’s County, Maryland, Schools after serving many years as an educator and coach. Mr. Smith was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Lexington. He is survived by his wife, Gay Frances “G.F.” Smith of the home; his daughters, Shelly Roberts and husband, Charlie, of Lexington, and Cathy Baptista, and husband, O.T., of Fairfax, VA; his sons, Cliff Smith and wife, Sue, of Bethesda, MD, Todd Wills of San Francisco, CA, and Rob Smith, of Bronx, NY; his brother, Ray Smith of Naples, FL; and his grandchildren, SPC Matthew Hammonds, US Army, and his wife, Megan, who are expecting Bob’s first great grandchild (a girl), Rachel Allison Roberts, Katie and Megan Smith, and Christina and Alex Baptista. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 310 S. Main Street, Lexington NC 27292.
