Bobbe Anderson Conrad died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016, at Piedmont Crossing in Thomasville. She was 86.
Conrad was born in the spring of 1929 to Robert Leo and Thelma Hedrick Anderson in Lexington, N.C. Raised with her two sisters in Hedrick’s Grove, she grew into a tall and striking woman, playing high school basketball for Davis Townsend Consolidated High School before graduating in 1947. She caught the eye of her future husband John Robert Conrad Sr. at a roller skating rink, shortly after his return from serving with the U.S. Army Air Force in Europe following World War II.
They would be married 53 years, raising two children and living for decades in Lexington’s Northside neighborhood. A graduate of Ashmore Business College, she worked as a bookkeeper and office manager at Green Printing Co. and Boaze Motor Co. in Lexington. She ended her career at Welborn Motors in Thomasville, electing to retire rather than learn computers. She was an active member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lexington, as well as Lutheran Women’s Circle, Lexington Business and Professional Women and Lexington Women’s Club. She also hosted countless gatherings of her bridge club.
She was inconsolable after losing her spouse to cancer in 2002, beginning her long vigil for what she believed would be their sweet reunion upon her own passing.
She is survived by her daughter Dr. Lisa Conrad Horne (John E.) and son John Robert Conrad, Jr. (Sabrina B.); grandchildren Michael Lewis Biesecker, Adam Anderson Horne (Leigh Anne W.), Alex Conrad Horne (Margaret R.), Robert Luke Conrad (Bonnie Smith, partner), and John David Conrad (Alex H.); great grandchildren Max C. Biesecker, Lucy A. Biesecker, Lily D. Biesecker, Gunner J. Horne, Riley A. Horne, Caroline F. Horne, and Benton C. Horne; sister Gail Anderson Craver; sister-in-laws Delia Ann Stone and Jimmie Conrad; and brother-in-law Farrell Austin. She was preceded in death by her sister Celeste Anderson Austin and brother-in-law, Billy Hoyle Craver.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at First Evangelical Lutheran Church located at 320 S. State Street in Lexington on Saturday, March 5 at 12:00 pm. The family will meet with friends from 10:30-11:45, prior to the service in the Chapel and other times at her daughter’s home.
Her family would like to express special thanks to the caregivers at Piedmont Crossing and Hospice of Davidson County.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Building Fund at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, PO Box 308, Lexington, NC 27292 or Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292.
