Brenda Overcash Varnadore

November 27, 1943 — December 30, 2023

Brenda Overcash Varnadore, 80, went home to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on December 30, 2023. Brenda was born to Harry and Hattie Pearl Payne Overcash in Iredell County on November 27, 1943.

She graduated from South Rowan High School and Pfeiffer College. She then began her teaching career in Lexington, NC, where she taught middle school for thirty-three years. After the passing of her husband, Avery C. “Ben” Varnadore, in 1991 and her retirement from the school system, she worked as a cashier at Walmart in Salisbury for many years. People would go through her line to get a friendly word and her signature “smiley” face on their receipts.

She was active in her church at St. Peter’s Lutheran up until an extended battle with cancer reduced her capacity to be out in public. She faced another battle that started before Thanksgiving of 2022 when she suffered a massive stroke that affected her speech and movement.

Brenda was blessed with family and lifelong friends on Varnadore Road and in the community, her closest friends being Judy Moore and the Lamb family on Varnadore Road. For over two decades, Judy and Brenda shared a home as two widows that the Lord would use to help each other through the ups and downs of life. During these years, “Mrs. B.” had a special place in her heart for her extended family, Billy, Jeff, Hanna, Madison, and little Vance. She was also close to a group of “young ladies” from St. Peter’s and would often go on adventures with them.

Brenda is preceded in death by her husband, Ben; mother, Hattie Pearl Overcash; father, Harry Overcash, stepmother Sarah Morgan; brother, Don Overcash, stepbrother Ray Reynolds; and stepdaughter, Candy Varnadore.

Brenda is survived by her son, Dr. Avery C. Varnadore Jr. (Tammy); and stepdaughters, Lesley Varnadore and Kim Varnadore; Grandchildren Matthew Varnadore (Faith), Katy Gerber (Aaron) and Ashlyn Varnadore; step-grandchildren Tristan Charles (Harley), Amber Charles, and Richie Varnadore; great-grandson, Greylan Thomas Varnadore.

A special thank you for the compassionate care “Mom” received during her time at Lexington Healthcare and from Bayada Hospice. Also, thank you to her roommate, Mrs. Debbie, for her love and care for Mom over the last year that they have been together.

The services will be on Thursday, January 4, 2023, at St. Peters Lutheran Church, 2750 St. Peters Lutheran Church Road, Salisbury NC 28146 with family visitation from 10-11 AM and the funeral service at 11 AM with Reverend Sue Lynn White and Dr. Avery C. Varnadore Jr. presiding. A graveside service will follow at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Gideon’s International for the placement of God’s Word around the world.
