Born in Clyde, North Carolina on November 5, 1941, Gene was the eldest son of the late Bonnie Stevenson Glance and the late James Carroll Glance. After graduating Crabtree Ironduff High School in Clyde, NC, he attended Brevard College. He was also a graduate of the North Carolina Highway Patrol training program. Following graduation, he married Margaret Passmore in 1964 and the couple resided in Charlotte, NC where he began his career with Pilot Freight as a Central Dispatcher. Upon moving to Winston Salem, he continued his employment for a number of years in the safety department at Pilot Freight before becoming a safety manager at Penske until his retirement in 2006.
Gene was a member of Pinedale Christian Church of Winston Salem. He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed deer hunting, fishing and camping. He was a longstanding member of the Winston Salem Loyal Order of Moose and was for many years an ardent supporter of UNC sports. Above all, he greatly enjoyed spending quality time with his family—in recent years, he particularly enjoyed attending his grandson’s basketball games and his granddaughter’s dance events. Gene will be greatly missed as a hardworking and devoted husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law and friend.
Gene is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Margaret Glance, an only daughter, Kimberly Glance Reams and son-in-law Murray Reams, all of Lexington, NC. In addition, he is survived by two grandchildren Samuel Gene and Emily Elisabeth Reams of Lexington, NC and a brother, Bill Glance and wife Teresa of Pawley’s Island, SC.
