Cana Sloan Swicegood, 100 years old, of Lexington passed away on April 9, 2026, at her home.
A celebration of life service will be conducted at 12 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, at Meadowview Reformed Presbyterian Church, 1 Graceway Drive, Lexington, NC 27295, with Rev. Francis Smith and Pastor Pablo Ayllon officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church and other times at the home, 486 Odell Owen Road.
Cana Sloan Swicegood was born in Iredell Co. North Carolina on May 13, 1925, to Roger Lee Sloan and Della Powell Sloan. She grew up in Winston-Salem and finished school at Clemmons High School. She moved to Lexington in 1953 and worked various jobs until she started working in the Dietary Department at Lexington Memorial Hospital at the old location and retired after 30 years at the present location.
She was married to her loving husband, David R. Swicegood for 57 years, who preceded her in death in 2002. Also preceding her in death were her parents and her grandchildren, Brian, Jill, Kevin, Jason, and other children whose first view was of Jesus, two sisters and six brothers.
Cana lived in Lexington for most of her 100 years. She was the oldest member of Meadowview Reformed Presbyterian Church in Lexington and was very active in various roles over her many years. She loved spending time with her family and many friends and loved nothing better than to fix meals in her home and fellowship with everyone. Her joy was baking cakes for her family, friends and church functions. One of her favorite things was to hear her sons sing in the Sounds of Joy Southern Gospel quartet.
Her greatest gift was the family God blessed her with. Left to cherish her memory are sons-Larry (Becky) Swicegood, Wayne (Diane) Swicegood and Eddie (Donna) Swicegood; her grandchildren-Marcie (Derek) Phillips, Joey (Tiffany) Swicegood, Monte (Frankie) of Lexington, NC, Josh (Lauren) Swicegood of Lexington, SC. Kyle (Anna) Swicegood of Wake Forest, NC, David (D.J.) Swicegood of Charlotte, NC, Brandi (Daniel) McAfee and Ashlee (Lee) Phillips of Lexington, NC, and Rick Swicegood. She was also blessed with 14 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
You didn't have to ask her about her faith; she would share it with anyone who would listen! Her church family were some of her closest friends over the years. As her health declined, she spoke often of the many visits, cards and phone calls she received from them.
The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Amy Bouchard for the loving care she gave to Cana. Amy was so kind and patient with Mom and made it easier for her to stay in her home. We would also like to thank her special friend, Karen Beck, for always being there when needed and to Dr. Jonathan Hinson & Staff for the excellent medical care he gave over many years.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be considered for Alpha Pregnancy Support, 406 National Blvd., Lexington or Pastors Pantry, 307 N. State St. Lexington.
