Mrs. Carol Myers May, 82, formerly of Balsam Drive, died Friday, March 6th at Piedmont Crossing after a decades-long battle from the residual effects of a brain aneurysm.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm Thursday March 19 at Grace Episcopal Church, where she was a member, by the Rev Stephen Becker. A private inurnment will be held in the church columbarium.
The family will receive friends following the service.
Mrs. May was born December 18, 1943 in Lexington to Phillip Arthur Myers and Dorothy Self Myers. She graduated from Lexington Sr High School in 1962. She attended Converse College and the University of North Carolina where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority, graduating in 1966.
Carol moved back home to Lexington and was a teacher in the Lexington City Schools. She met her husband Bert of 53 years and they had 2 sons. Carol loved to play tennis and won the city doubles championship with her sister, Dottie. They also coached the Lexington Sr. High girls tennis team and Carol won Central Piedmont Conference Coach of the year in 1989.
Carol loved classical music. She played the piano and organ (serving as organist for a time at Fairmont Presbyterian Church) She would play the piano and sing for hours on end, never wanting to stop.
Perhaps her biggest calling was to the various civic and charitable organizations in Davidson County; Charity League leading the way. Carol volunteered with the clothing store and the Holiday House while also acting in the annual plays they produced. (She would pretend she was on Broadway)
Even after her illness, she kept a great attitude and a radiant smile (one significantly amplified by the sight of her grandkids or a black labrador retriever)
Her husband, Bert Deems May, Sr, her son, Jacob Shuford May, and her brother-in-law, Charles McGirt, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son, Bert Deems May, Jr. and wife, Susan W. May, of Charlotte; her grandchildren, Lindsay-Catherine Shuford May of Brooklyn, NY, Bert Deems May III of Chapel Hill, NC, Jacob Shuford May, Jr, Emerson Nguyen May; Huntley Caroline May and her beloved sister, Dottie Myers McGirt of Lexington.
The family gives profound thanks to the caregivers at Brookdale of Lexington, Summitt Place of Charlotte, Bermuda Commons of Advance, and Piedmont Crossing of Thomasville. Thank you for the wonderful care you gave Carol for 8 years. There are no better people in this world than those that care for the elderly.
In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to Charles and Julia England Foundation, PO Box 23, Lexington, NC 27293 or www.besomebody.fund.com/donate
