Carolyn Coleman Jackson, 88, of Lexington, died Sunday, January 10, 2016, at her home.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, January 15, 2016, at First Lutheran Church where she was a member with Pastor Matthew Miller officiating; a committal will follow. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.
Ms. Jackson was born October 23, 1927, in New York, to Francis Alexander Coleman and Margaret Elizabeth Stokes Coleman. Carolyn received her undergraduate degree from Shaw University with a major in Language Arts and a minor in History. While at Shaw, she became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. She received her master’s degree from Queens College (NY) in Early Childhood Development. She was an avid educator, from being a teacher to educating people about HIV/AIDS for the New York Department of Health. Ms. Jackson was also a world traveler. She lived in Spain and Germany and also visited many areas of Europe. When she moved from New York to North Carolina, she continued her passion for education by working for Tiny Tots Preschool, the Lexington Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, and the YMCA afterschool program.
She was preceded in death by family members, Robert A. Coleman, Margaret M. Coleman Holmes, Lenchen E. Coleman DeVane, Rev. Dr. Ronald G. Coleman, and three other siblings, as well as grandparents Ellen Miller, Ben Stokes, Caroline and Robert Coleman.
Surviving are her daughter, Klaudia Jackson (Robert); grandchildren, Tasheem Jackson (Julie), Shemeka White (Franklin), and Da’Shanna Jackson; great-grandchildren, Zahmier Parker and Malakai Barmore, all of Lexington; brother, Rev. Walter Coleman of Troy; special sister-in-law, Edna Coleman of Lexington; special nephew, Timothy DeVane (Priscilla) of Greensboro, and many other family and friends.
