Mrs. Carolyn Winberry Phillips, age 79, of Western Boulevard, Lexington, North Carolina,
died Friday, September 10, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, September 13, at First Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by Rev. Tommy Wilson. Entombment will follow at
the First Baptist Church Columbarium.
The family will see friends from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church Parlor prior to the service.
Mrs. Phillips was born September 5, 1931, in Iredell County, to Charles B.Winberry and Virginia Reece Winberry. She was preceded in death by her parents and by a brother, Charles B. Winberry, Jr. She was graduated magna
cum laude from Wake Forest College and received a Masters of Social Work from the University of
North Carolina. She was employed from 1953 until 1960 with the Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina in Thomasville. She worked for the Davidson County Department of Social Services from 1964 through 1992, retiring as Child Welfare Supervisor.
Mrs. Phillips dedicated her life to helping children and people in need.She was a member of the Davidson County Task Force for Community Alternatives for
Children, was Chairman of the steering committee that organized the Davidson County Domestic Violence Services, was a member of the Juvenile Justice Committee of the Governor’s Crime Commission and was a member andSecretary-Treasurer of the North Carolina Certification Board for Social
Work. She served on the Davidson County Social Service
Board.
Mrs. Phillips was committed to her church. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lexington, where she was an adult Sunday School teacher, children's mission leader, youth fellowship leader, assistant organist, deacon, and served on the mission committee.
She loved reading, playing bridge, music, baseball, and ACC basketball.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Phillips of the home, a son, Jim Phillips, Jr., and wife, Susan, of Greensboro; daughters, Gini P. Rogers and husband, Pete, of Blackfoot, Idaho and Sara P. Briggs and husband, Greg, of
Welcome; grandchildren Caroline Phillips, Haley Phillips, Katherine
Phillips, Meredith Briggs, Jillian Briggs and Emily Kuehm.
She loved her grandchildren, was very proud of them, and enjoyed spending time with them.
