Carroll Thomas McDade Sr., 78, passed away Friday, April 5, 2013, at his home.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, at Center United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Stephen W. Pillsbury officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home on Ryan Street.
Carroll was born August 30, 1934, in Davidson County, to Eston Taylor and Rena Alexander McDade. He graduated from Lexington High School in 1952, and completed courses in Time Study and Work Simplification at Henderson, Lindsey and Michaels Management Consultants in Greenville, SC, as well as completed transportation management school at Perdue University in Lafayette, Ind. A lifelong resident of Lexington, he spent most of his adult life working in and for the city. He retired in 1999 from the City of Lexington as the superintendent of the Sanitation and Garage Departments. He was a graduate of Leadership Davidson County and attended the Institute of Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Caroll was an active member of Lexington’s business and cultural community. He was a member and past president of the Lexington Industrial Management Club, and a charter member and first president of the Lexington Men of Song. He played in several local theater productions sponsored by the Lexington Woman’s Club such as Oklahoma, Annie Get Your Gun and You Can’t Take It With You. He loved music and was a gifted soloist, singing publicly from the age of six until his death. He frequently sang at weddings, funerals and numerous performances held at Center United Methodist Church.
Known to his family and friends as Carroll or “Papa”, he loved God, his church and his friends. But, most of all, he loved his family. In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by brothers, Charles and Furman McDade.
Carroll is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Jewell McCrary McDade; son, Carroll Thomas “Tommy” McDade Jr. of Lexington; daughters, Cathy McDade Horton and husband Owen “T” of Raleigh, Kim McDade Pitts and husband Eddie of Burlington; grandchildren, Megan Brown, Allyson Parks, Hannah Bower, Joshua Parks, Taylor McDade, Cyrus Horton, Katy Parker, Jessica McDade, Rachel McDade, Jennifer Hanopole and Johnathon Pitts; great-grandchildren, Sarah Ann McDade, Kateland McDade, Camden Burnette, Isabelle Bower, Gavyn Williams, Mia McDade, Mason Hanopole, Natalie Brown, Emily Brown, and Lily Brown; sisters, Helen Linder, Evelyn Kepley and husband Don, both of Lexington; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, Carroll requested that books be donated to the City of Lexington’s public libraries. Additionally, memorials may be made to the Center UMC Christian Fellowship Center, P.O. Box 179, Welcome, NC 27374.
