A funeral to honor her life will take place the following day, on Friday, March 28, 2025, at 2:00 PM, at Smith Grove Baptist Church, with Rev. Terry Smith officiating.

Burial at Higher Ground Baptist church will follow the service.

Cathy was born on March 31, 1951, in Buffalo, New York, to the late Richard and Lucy Magee. She spent her formative years in Lexington, where she attended school and was honored with the title of “Miss Lexington” in her youth.

Those who knew Cathy will always remember her warm and generous spirit, her quick wit, and her remarkable ability to find joy in everyday moments. She had a deep and abiding kindness for all living creatures, with a particular fondness for horses.

Everything she pursued was infused with love, and her dedication to her community—especially to children—was evident in both her work and her passions. A gifted artist across various mediums, Cathy was particularly renowned for her basket weaving and quilting. For a time, she owned and operated her own basket shop, where she not only displayed and sold her highly sought-after creations but also shared her craft with those eager to learn.

Her quilts, however, were more than works of art—they were a calling from Heaven above. With evert stitch, her hands wove God’s love and care: a symbol of protection and God’s warmth for the kids that needed them in foster care, to those in prayer. All kids from all walks of life could have something of their own. By her hands through God’s will.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers, James and Richard, and sister, Connie.

Left to carry on her legacy are her husband, Mackie Travis, of the home; sons, Billy Magee (Kim), of Advance, Nick Byerly (Brooke), of Locust, Jonathan Travis (Melissa), of Texas, Matthew (Teresa), of Linwood, and Jeff Gragg (Amber), of Lexington; sisters, Virginia Roberson, Brenda Brinkley, Candy Kent, and Cheryl Blackburn; fourteen grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Lexington Children’s Home, 3844 NC Hwy 8 Lexington, NC 27292 or PO Box 1288 Lexington, NC 27293.
