Charles Holton Davis Sr.

Charles Holton Davis, Sr., 95, of Lexington, NC, passed away Sunday, May 22, 2016 after an extended decline in health. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 25 at First Reformed United Church of Christ, Lexington, where he was a member, by the Rev. Elizabeth Horton. Inurnment will be in the church columbarium. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church parlor prior to the memorial service and other times at the home. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Ruth Morris Davis. Surviving are two sons, Charles Davis Jr. and his wife, Sharon, of Raleigh and William Davis and his wife, Renata, and sons Will and Andrew of Greensboro; one daughter, Ruth Morris Davis of Harrisonburg, Va.; two granddaughters, Sara Prince of Baltimore, Md. and Laura Prince, husband Allen Noyes and daughter Phoebe of Dunkirk, Md.; and many other beloved nieces and nephews. Charles was born in the Churchland community March 11, 1921 to Olin Thales Davis Sr. and Sarah Louise Barnes Davis. He attended Churchland High School and Lenoir Rhyne College. A proud veteran of WWII, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945. He was a 60 year member and past Commander of the American Legion, Post 8, and was a long-time supporter of Legion baseball. He was a retired Rural Mail Carrier for the USPS where he carried Route 8 in the Linwood-Southmont area for many years. Charles was an avid gardener, delighting in sharing his vegetables and flowers with family, friends and neighbors. He loved to travel, having visited all 50 states and numerous countries during his life. Most of all, he was a proud and doting granddaddy of four and was thrilled in his last years to become a great granddad. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to First Reformed United Church of Christ, 104 E. Center St., Lexington, N.C. 27292, Hospice of Davidson County, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
