Charles Bascom Leonard

Charles Bascom (Sonny) Leonard, age 88, of North Highway 150, Lexington, NC passed away at his home on Tuesday, February 20, 2024.  He passed away after being in declining health for over a year.

Sonny was the son of Robert Leo and Edna Harris Leonard of Lexington.  He attended Lexington City Schools, Catawba College and DeVry School of Engineering in Chicago, Illinois.  He was an engineer with the Lexington Telephone Company from 1965 to 1992.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Robert Leo Leonard, Jr. and his sister, Sue Leonard Rollins.

Surviving Sonny is his wife of 68 years, Raye Whitted Leonard, daughters, Debbie Tate (Jim) of Trinity, NC, and Kim Brown (Larry) of Lexington, NC, grandchildren, Will Tate, Anna Raye Tate, and Kevin Brown (Jessica).  His great-grandchildren are Levi Tate and Sophia Tate.  He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Sonny loved being outdoors.  He enjoyed sailing, fishing, and hunting.  He loved woodworking and was known to build about anything with wood and could fix just about anything.  He also liked working to restore older cars.  Sonny volunteered as a member of the Davidson County Rescue Squad.  In retirement, he and Raye traveled extensively.  There were trips to New Zealand, Europe, several cruises plus traveling the United States and Canada in a motorhome with Will and Anna Raye.

Sonny was a member of First Baptist Church, Lexington, NC, and the Crusaders Sunday School Class.  The family will receive friends on Friday, February 23, 2024, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Davidson Funeral Home on North Main Street in Lexington, NC.  His funeral service will be at 11:00 am Saturday, February 24, 2024, in the Sanctuary of First Baptist Church, 201 West 3rd Avenue, Lexington, NC with Dr. Ray N. Howell, III and Rev. Chris Byrne officiating.  Burial will follow the service at Forest Hill Cemetery in Lexington, NC.
