Charles Alfred (Chuck) Van Hoorne, age 81, of Lexington died Friday evening August, 28, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, August 31, 2009 at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Brian Alexander and Rev. Lamar Moore officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Memorial Park with Military Graveside Honors.
Mr. Van Hoorne was born in McMillian, Michigan on March 11, 1928. He was the son of the late Julius A. Van Hoorne and Veda Kline Van Hoorne.
Chuck retired from the US Army July 1, 1966 after 20 years of service. He then worked as Assistant Manager, Pleasants Hardware, Trade Street, for twelve years. In the Army, Mr. Van Hoorne reached the rank of Master Sergeant E-8. He served in various assignments at Fort Jackson, SC, Germany, Korea, Italy, Fort Hood, Texas, Fort Knox, KY and Fort Bragg, NC. He received several medals including Good Conduct, Sharpshooter, the Korea Defense Service Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a dedicated soldier and a true patriot.
Chuck was a faithful member of Center Hill Baptist Church, Lexington with Helen, his loving wife of 57 years. He loved fishing, hunting, wood working, guitar playing and most of all his family.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Crouse Van Hoorne of the home, his daughter, Gloria Apple and husband, Jim of Columbia, SC; his son, Charles “Butch” Van Hoorne and wife, Vicki of Kernersville, NC; his grandchildren, Derrick (Claire) Apple of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Courtney (Brad) Westphal of Kernersville; and Emily Apple of Houston, Texas; two great grandchildren, twins, Brody and Jaxon Westphal of Kernersville.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Sunday, August 30, 2009 at DAVIDSON FUNERAL HOME
