Clark "Gene" Eugene Smith

October 26, 1934 — July 11, 2014

Clark Eugene “Gene” Smith, 79, of Michael Road, died Friday, July 11, 2014, at Hinkle Hospice House of Lexington after a lengthy illness. A funeral will be 4 p.m. Monday, July 14, 2014, at Reeds Baptist Church with the Rev. Henry Watterson. Burial will follow at Bethel Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. prior to the service. Mr. Smith was born October 26, 1934, in Lexington, to Noah and Lessie Smith. He graduated from Reeds High School and was a brick mason and general contractor. A lifelong servant of Christ, he served as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Choir Member at Reeds Baptist Church and in his service, helped build churches and bridges in Africa, Brazil and Grenada on numerous mission trips. He also served as a local board member of Security Bank. His greatest love was time with family, sharing his faith and being outdoors. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Michael Scott; infant daughter, Kristi Lynn; and his sister, Lorene Shoaf. Mr. Smith leaves behind friends and family who will forever cherish his memory. His loving wife of 59 years, Mrs. Jo Carrol Michael Smith; his daughters, Tonya Smith Ragan and husband Tim, Vicki Smith Clarkson and husband David; grandchildren, Jared Everhart and wife Shelli, Kathryn Jackson and husband Davin, Josh Clarkson and Daniel Everhart; great-grandchildren, Finn and Wells Everhart; brothers and sisters, Weldon Smith and wife Lola, Jack Smith and wife Sylvia Ray, Nolan Smith and wife Sue, Evelyn Sink and husband J.E., Pattie Payne and husband Richard, and Betty Chloe Campbell and husband Bruce; and special friend, Curtis Rucker. The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation and prayers for all the wonderful caregivers and the Hospice staff who so lovingly provided such amazing care during his time of need. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC; or to CurePSP at www.CurePSP.org online where there is a tribute setup in his name or mail to Cure PSP at East Padonia Road, Suite 201, Timonium, MD 21093 using his name as reference.
