CMSgt. Van Porter Brown – Retired USAF, 72, of Village Drive, died Monday, August 25, 2014, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday, August 29, 2014, at Victory Baptist Church on Dykers Creek Road, where he attended, with Pastor Ralph Byrd officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Davidson Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 28, 2014. CMSgt. Brown was born March 7, 1942, in Stokes County, to Norman Porter Brown and Annie Williams Southern. He was retired from the United States Air Force having proudly served for 30 years and earning the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He enjoyed his grandchildren, traveling, cooking and grilling at family gatherings. His father preceded him in death. Surviving are his loving wife, Deborah Byrd Brown, of the home; son, Van Brown Jr. (Melissa Young) of Tonganoxie, KS.; daughters, Jodi Hogan (Doug) of Topeka, KS, Sherry Adams (Mike) of Andover, KS, and Kim Brown of Houston, Texas; step-sons, Kevin Dwayne Mize Jr. of Concord and Joshua Mize of Colorado Springs, CO.; stepdaughter, Tiffany Young (Jon) of Lexington; his mother, Annie Williams Southern of Walnut Cove; grandchildren, Shantel, Cassidy, Chris, Aaron, Nick, Janelle, Jake, Mason, and Riley; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Carolyn Kiger (James Harbuck) of Walnut Cove. Memorials may be made to Victory Baptist Church, 812 Dykers Creek Road, Lexington, NC 27295.
