COL. Louis (Ike) Alpheus Green (Retired), age 89 of Lexington, passed away the morning of Saturday, May 30, 2009 at Lexington Health Care.
The son of Harvey Clayton Green and Mary Antoinette Andrew Green, he was born in Lexington, on September 18, 1919. He graduated from Lexington High School and then Catawba College in 1942, where he played football for all 4 1/2 years. While at Catawba he was named Little All American and was later inducted into Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame. He served as a military officer in the United States Air Force for 29 1/2 years. A fighter pilot throughout his military career, he was active in World War II and the Korean War. After retiring from the military, he was the pilot for Coble Dairy in Lexington for 17 years.
Surviving are his beloved wife of almost 59 years, Hester (Vicky) Clarine Green; one daughter, Marsha Ann Green FitzGerald and husband Michael of Bridgewater, VA; three granddaughters, Kate Ann FitzGerald of Denver, CO, Rachel Grace FitzGerald and Lindsey Green FitzGerald both of Bridgewater, VA; his only sister and sibling, Mary Louise Green Rollins of Lexington; two nephews, John Rollins of Greenville, NC and David Rollins of Lexington, NC.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday (June 4, 2009) at 11:00 am at First Reformed United Church of Christ, with Dr. Walter Patten, Dr. Lee Jessup and Rev Mike Hooper officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 10:00 until 11:00 am in the church parlor. Interment of his remains will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC.
