Curtis Herman Queen, 84, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2025 at his home in Lexington after years of declining health. Curtis, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, was born in Swain County to the late Herman Haynes and Vadie Queen on October 23, 1940. No matter what you called him – Pop, Pawpaw, or Curt – Curtis never met a stranger and was loved by everyone who knew him. He grew up playing softball, hunting, fishing, and running around with his extended family in Lexington and Bryson City. He married Elsie Temple in 1960, the most clutch grand slam of his career, and they were side-by-side in everything they did for the next 65 years. Curtis worked at various furniture factories in town before starting his own landscaping business, allowing him to do what he loved to do, for a living until a severe stroke in 2021. He was most comfortable on a tractor or a lawn mower, or on the front porch waiting for company to drop by for a visit. As much as he enjoyed working, there was nothing he loved more than spending time with his family: sons Michael (Shonda) and Jason (Kristy), grandchildren Harlie, Michaela, Dalton, Jake, Tucker, Eli, Bella, and Bentley, and great-grandchildren Kallahan, Kassius, and Kohen. They were his pride and joy, and if you saw him out at Southern Lunch or Smokey Joe’s you heard all about them. He never missed an event or a ballgame, and he got the biggest kick out of entertaining the entire cheering section around him. The family would like to extend its deepest appreciation to CrossPoint Church of Lexington for its ceaseless prayers and support, the Pine Top Road family, Hospice of Davidson County (Tiffany and Jackie) and the VA. There is no way we could ever thank you enough for your love and care. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters Velvie and Venice, his brother Raymond, and niece Patricia. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his brother Billy (Shirley) and sister Agnes, along with dozens of cousins, nieces, and nephews he loved dearly. The family will welcome visitors at the home on Pine Top Road. A visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00 pm Wednesday at Davidson Funeral home, followed by the service at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel. The burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery in Lexington.
