Dale Voncannon

June 12, 1927 — October 14, 2009

Dale Lee Voncannon, 82, of Abbid Street, died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009, at his home after declining health of several years. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethany United Methodist Church, where he was a member, by the Rev. Allen Van Meter. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites by VFW Post 3074. Mr. Voncannon was born June 12, 1927, in Randolph County to Walter Dale Voncannon and Pearl Ann Richardson Voncannon. He was retired owner/operator of South Lexington Barber Shop. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Voncannon was a member of VFW Post 3074, Methodist Men, past commander of the American Legion Post in Asheboro and a huge supporter of the American Children's Home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Hicks Voncannon, and numerous brothers and sisters. Surviving are three sons, Gerald Voncannon and his wife, Leslie, and Maxton Voncannon and his wife, Caroline, all of Concord, and Douglas Voncannon and his wife, Chris, of Lexington; two daughters, Beverly Briggs and her husband, Stanley, and Renee Dwyer and her husband, Matt, all of Lexington; 10 grandchildren, Leigh Parker, Sarah Voncannon, Anna Voncannon, Nathan Dale Briggs, Ashley Voncannon, Katie Voncannon, April Martin, Samuel Voncannon, Melinda Dwyer and Meredith Dwyer; two great-grandchildren, Jacob Parker and William Parker; and a sister, Esther Ward of Asheboro. A special thanks to his friend and companion of 10 years, Jean Pickett. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel and other times at the home.
