Dan K. Moore, Jr.

November 3, 1940 — August 19, 2025

Mr. Daniel Killian Moore, Jr., 84, of Lexington, died Tuesday morning, the 19th of August, after a long illness.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 23, at Grace Episcopal Church, 419 South Main St., in Lexington. Inurnment will follow within the church columbarium.  The family will greet friends following the service.

He was born November 3, 1940, in Sylva, NC, the only son of Governor Dan K. Moore and Jeanelle Coulter. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business in 1963. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta and maintained close friendships with his brothers for the rest of his life. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Army Reserves.

While at UNC-CH, he met Sarah Frances Brock, and they married on January 4, 1964. They lived for a time in Raleigh, where he and Fran were involved in his father’s successful run for governor of North Carolina (1965-1969.) The couple then moved to Hickory for a short time, before settling into their present home of Lexington.

Dan worked at and managed Pat Brown Lumber Company in Lexington for 25 years, learning the dynamics of importing/exporting high-end types of wood. In 1990, he started Dan K. Moore Lumber company, specializing in importing mahogany from Brazil.

Dan whole-heartedly loved his family and gave generously of both himself and his time. He served many years on the board of BB&T. As a pilot, Dan enjoyed serving on the Airport Commission. He was in the Kiwanis Club and also on the Vestry at Grace Episcopal.

Anyone who knew him would agree that one of his favorite pursuits was golf. He would spend many a day enjoying the game, usually coming in warm, tired, and happy from playing.

If anything could outdo a great game of golf though, it was his beloved Carolina Tar Heels basketball and football teams. In fact, he started at Carolina the same year (1958) legendary coach Dean Smith became an assistant coach. Dan pulled his Tar Heels to numerous National and Final Four championships over the years, never wavering in his belief of them.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister (Edith Hamilton). He is survived by Fran, his wife of 61 years, son Daniel Brock and Melanie, of Asheville, nephew Blanton Hamilton, of Charlotte, niece Jeanelle and Rik Lovett, of Raleigh, and many great-nieces and nephews.

The family would especially like to thank Kathy Watford, Wesley McCormick, Jimmietta Sadler, Wayne Morrison and Hospice of Davidson County for their care and commitment.

Dan's service will be streamed via Facebook and YouTube through Grace Episcopal Church - Lexington.
