David Vaughan Speaks

David Vaughan Speaks, 74 passed away Thursday, December 20, 2012 in Onslow County, NC. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, December 28, 2012 at 6:00 PM at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. David Speaks founded Chars Hamburgers in 1969, eventually expanding to serve 5 locations in the area. He had a great love for his work, his employees and his customers, making many life-long friends. Dave and Ann purchased a second home in Swansboro, NC. There they met and made many wonderful friends. In 1986, Dave and Ann started displaying thousands of Christmas lights. Their neighbors were inspired to do the same, turning their neighborhood into a family destination for the Christmas Season, bringing joy to thousands of seasonal visitors. David was known for his sense of humor, quick wit, warm smile, generosity, and compassion. He was always willing to listen to others, through his wisdom and loving spirit, gave sound advice. He will always be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother and father-in-law. He left a legacy that will never be forgotten. He will be missed by Happy & Buffy, his 2 dogs. He was a member of Pinedale Church of Christ. David was born in Forsyth County on July 1, 1938 to Mallard and Edith Ferris Speaks. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. Surviving are his wife Annie Ruth Smith Speaks of the home; one son, Jeffery Speaks and wife Pamela Luzardo of King; one daughter, Lisa Speaks Carter and husband Rocky of Swansboro, NC; one sister, Marie Padgett of Charlottesville, VA; four grandchildren, Macy, Lauren, Morgan and Anna Clair. Memorials may be made to Thomasville Medical Center, Behavioral Health, 207 Old Lexington Rd., Thomasville, NC 27360. Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel is assisting the family.
