Mrs. Dawn Koonts Shaak, 71, of West Second Avenue, died Tuesday, November 8 at Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm Friday, November 11 at First Reformed United Church of Christ, by the Revs. Elizabeth Horton, Mike Hooper, Robin Keating and Dr. Lee Jessup. A private inurnment will be held in the church columbarium. The family will receive friends from 11:30 to 1:30 pm Friday for visitation and light refreshments in the church fellowship hall. Mrs. Shaak was born March 6, 1945 in Lexington to H. C. Koonts, Jr. and Rachael Myers Koonts. She was a 1963 graduate of Lexington Senior High School and a 1967 graduate of Catawba College. She retired after twenty years of service with Davidson County Schools in the elementary grades, primarily teaching kindergarten at Tyro and Reeds Elementary. After retirement, she joined her mother in operating Dawn’s Bridal Shop for almost 30 years. She was active in her church as an elder and deacon, and served as the first female chair of the Consistory. She also was the caretaker for her parents for twelve years. They preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Robert R. Shaak, of the home; her daughter, Raeann Biesecker of Lexington; her son, John Robert “Rob” Shaak and wife, Betsy, of Charleston, WV; four grandchildren, Holt Biesecker, Noah, Chloe and Mary Taylor Shaak; her sister in law, Sally Ann Weeks and husband, Dr. Jim Weeks; and her aunt, Thelma Myers of Lexington.
