Dermont Odell Morris, 80, of Lexington, NC, formerly of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 21, 2025 in Lexington. He was born on July 20th, 1944 in Lexington to Odell Kiser and Ella Mae Leonard Morris. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Wayne Morris and wife Shelia.. Dermont is survived by his brother, Joe (Helen) Morris; niece, Audrey Morris; nephew, Michael (Lea) Morris; nephew, Jeff Morris; and niece, Jennifer (Aaron) Perrell. Also surviving are several great nephews and nieces. Dermont attended Pilot School in Thomasville for grades 1 - 11. He was in the first class to graduate from the newly formed East Davidson High School in 1962. Proudly serving as a Photographer’s Mate (PH3) in the United States Coast Guard from 1965- 1969, his tour took him to Antarctica aboard the ice breaker USCGC Westwind. On board the Westwind, he was assigned to US Navy Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 4 for aerial surveillance and scientific operations. A gifted photographer, his award winning photos were used by the Coast Guard for recruiting and official publications. Upon returning home from serving his country, Dermont earned an Associate of Arts in Accounting and an Associate of Arts in Computer Technology from Forsyth Technical Community College. After retiring from a 39 year career with the United States Postal Service, he continued to live in Winston-Salem where he was a member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church. He developed long time close friendships in his neighborhood and was known as someone that could be called upon in times of need. He was also a lifelong member of Pilgrim Reformed Church in Lexington. Dermont was a devoted student of genealogy and was extremely knowledgeable about family history and Pilgrim’s historical cemetery. Woodworking was a hobby in his earlier years and he made several beautiful pieces of furniture. At Dermont's request, a graveside service will be held 11:00 am May 1st, 2025 at Pilgrim Reformed Church, 797 Pilgrim Church Road, Lexington NC. The family will recieve friends and family after the service. The service will be officiated by Reverend Richard Moore. The family respectfully requests no flowers.
