Donald William Berndt, 82, of West Grove Road, died Friday, July 02, 2010, at Hinkle Hospice House.
The funeral will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel with the Bishop Ronnie Shaw officiating. Burial will follow in National Cemetery, Salisbury with military honors. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 5, 2010, and other times at the home.
Mr. Berndt was born April 30, 1928, in Kings County, NY, to Walter Berndt and Verona Caine Berndt. He was a graduate of Lehigh University and Springfield College in Springfield Massachusetts earning a Masters in education. He was retired assistant principal and a member of First Presbyterian Church in New Bern. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Donna Ann Davenport; and a brother Walter Berndt.
Surviving are his wife, Jean Arline McElhiney Berndt of the home; sons, Donald J. Berndt and wife, Pamela, of Florida and Thomas W. Berndt of California, Scott Davenport and wife, Betty, of Lexington, and Wayne Davenport of Georgia; daughter, Gail Stalcup and husband, Paul, of Ga; grandchildren, Brett Davenport of New York, Kevin Davenport, and Hope Davenport, both of Lexington. Alex, James and Emma Berndt, all of Florida.
