Donald Fuller Ransom 02-22-1924 to 02-08-2010
My father succumbed to the ravages of Alzheimer’s Disease. He leaves behind and was a loving husband to his wife, Dorisanne, a loving father to both my sister Debby and her husband Dan and to both me, Randy, and my wife Colleen. He will also be deeply missed by his three grandchildren, Joshua, Grahm and Ellie.
He was the youngest of seven children born to Adelbert Raymond Ransom and Goldie Fuller Ransom. He had two brothers, Raymond and Walter, and four sisters Margaret, Annette, Hope and Harriet. His siblings and parents departed before him, but he leaves behind many nieces and nephews that loved him. Donald was a decendent of Samuel Fuller, who traveled to America as a child with his parents on the Mayflower.
At age 18, after he had graduated from Kingston High School in Kingston, NY, he enlisted with the Army Air Corp to fight for our freedom in World War II. During the war he was a tail gunner on a B-24 Bomber, where he flew 30+ missions even though he was eligible to return home after 25 missions. During his distinguished service, he was in the first daylight bombing of Berlin, and he proudly received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his valor.
After the war he worked for AT&T and its different divisions, first with New York Telephone and later with Western Electric. He retired from Western Electric in Winston-Salem, NC as a Senior Technical Writer Level 4. He was a life time member of the VFW and a Telephone Pioneer member.
He retired to a small farm in Walnut Cove, NC where he and my mother lived and enjoyed restoring an old farm house. Declining health made it necessary to move into an assisted living facility, first Walnut Ridge in Walnut Cove, NC and later at Mallard Ridge in Clemmons, NC.
The entire family wishes to thank The Ridge Care Facilities and their caring staff, as well as Hospice for the care, help and support they supplied to both my father and our family, during his last months.
The family also wishes that, in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to your local Hospice Service in memory of my father.
Funeral arrangements are as follows: The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on February 10, 2010 at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel.
There will be a private graveside service at National Cemetery of Salisbury at a later date.Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel is serving the family.
Pop, I miss you so much. Randy
