Doreen Newberg Shircliffe

July 29, 1930 — March 8, 2018

Doreen Newberg Shircliffe, 87, of Farmbrooke Lane in Winston-Salem, died Thursday at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House. A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Sunday at Oak Forest United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with Pastor Julie Wilburn Peeler officiating services. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel. Mrs. Shircliffe was born July 29, 1930 in Pawtucket RI to Emil Newberg and Margaret Bickerstaff Newberg. Doreen married at 19 and left with her Navy husband, Albert Craycroft Shircliffe, for his tour of duty throughout Europe. Making their home in several states after returning to the USA, they settled in Winston-Salem, NC upon her husband’s retirement from the Navy. She began work, after her children were older, at Bowman Gray School of Medicine, as an administrative secretary in the Surgery Research Department. Upon retirement, they both enjoyed frequent travel adventures and visits with family in Virginia Beach. Doreen led a beautiful, positive and spirit filled life. Enjoying both her family and church life. For such a petite lady, she will leave behind a large hole in our hearts. Yet that space is filled with wonderful memories. Praise God for gifting us with her in our lives. Where there is deep grief, there was great love. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and three brothers, Carl Newberg, Donald Newberg, and Ken Newberg. Surviving is a son Larry Shircliffe (Kelly) of Lexington; two daughters, Carleen Hill (Gil Jr.) of Lexington and Darleen Mastin (Jim) of Virginia Beach, Virginia; one sister, Marlene Simmons (Bob) of MA; 4 grandchildren Brandon, Brittany, Mark and Alex, and also her precious  great-grandchildren. The family would also like to express their deep appreciation to her extended family, church family and many close friends that have loved and supported Doreen over the years. In addition to flowers, donations may be made to Oak Forest United Methodist Church 11461 Old US Highway 52 Winston-Salem 27107.        Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel is assisting the family.
