Doris was born on November 23, 1935, in Davidson County to the late Wade Arlin Walser and Kate Jane Shoaf Walser. She attended Welcome School and graduated from North Davidson High School in 1954. On March 6, 1954, she married Henry Luther Adkins, who preceded her in death on May 27, 2003. They shared 49 years of marriage. Following their marriage and her graduation, Doris traveled across the country with Henry during his service in the United States Air Force. Their military journey began in Albuquerque, New Mexico, followed by assignments in Massachusetts—where their sons Doug and Steve were born—then Florida, Hawaii, and back to Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, where their youngest son, Scott, was born. During Henry’s service in Vietnam, Doris and the boys returned to Welcome to be near family. After his return, the family relocated to Los Angeles, California, where Henry completed his military career. Upon his retirement, Doris and Henry returned home to Welcome in 1973. After settling back in Welcome, Doris devoted herself to her family as a homemaker and later worked at Duracell, from which she retired. She was a faithful member of Bethesda Church and the Susanna Wesley Sunday School Class. Doris took great joy in her family. In August 2025, she was especially proud to welcome her fifth generation with the birth of her great-great-grandson, Everette. In November 2025, she was honored to celebrate her 90th birthday surrounded by close family and friends. Doris lived a full life surrounded by those she loved. She enjoyed yard sales, estate auctions, and thrift shopping, often turning those outings into cherished time with friends. She also enjoyed playing sweepstakes and sharing laughter together. Through the years, she remained close with her high school friends, meeting regularly for lunch. Doris enjoyed playing bridge with her girlfriends and loved card and board games with her family. Annual beach trips with her siblings and family were especially dear to her.
In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Luther Adkins; her son, Scott Arlin Adkins, and a granddaughter, Natalie Dawn Adkins; her brothers, L.V. Walser, Melvin Walser, Bill Walser, Toby Walser; and her sister, Patty Phelps.
Surviving are sons, Steven Luther Adkins (Kathy) and Douglas James Adkins (Kathy); a brother Talbert Walser and sister-in-law, Carolyn; eight grandchildren, Stacy Byram (Shawn), Carey Adkins, Tiffany Richardson (Beau), Mary Katherine Adkins (Vinny), Elizabeth Anne Adkins (Drake), Jonathan (Katie) Adkins, Aaron Adkins and Sam Adkins; eight great-grandchildren: Abbi, Zach, Haley (Grant), Liam, Kade, Kaila, Emea, and Oliver; one great-great-grandson, Everette; one great-grandson on the way; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends, all of whom she loved dearly.
