Mrs. Doris Snider Byrd King, 98, of Simerson Road, died Thursday, August 22 at Rowan Medical Center in Salisbury.
A funeral service will be held at 4pm Sunday, August 25 at the Davidson Funeral Home Chapel, by the Rev. Ralph Dale. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 4:00pm prior to the service.
Mrs. King was born May 7, 1926, in Davidson County to Robert Franklin Snider and Sarah Jane Williams Snider.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Wilbur Trevis Byrd, and Ray King, Her Daughters in Law Rebecca Byrd and Pamela Byrd, her brothers, R.G. Snider, Marvin Snider, Archie Lowe Snider; her sisters, Ruby Snider, Theodocia Garner, Ultra Sowers, and Sylvia Snider; and her stepson Stephen Ray King.
She is survived by her sons, Barry Trevis Byrd of Faith, Kevin Archie Byrd (Debbie) of Winston-Salem and Anthony Tim Byrd of Lexington; her stepdaughter, Brenda Ann Chapman (Steve) of Pawleys Island, SC; and Pam King Purdy (Jim) of Burlington, NC. Ten grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and a great great-grandchild.
She was raised on a farm in the Smith Grove community of rural Davidson County NC. In the summer of 1941 met Trevis when he came to work on an older sister’s farm. When Trevis left for service in the Army, he asked mother to write him. She did, every day for the entire time he was gone. She remembered his service number the rest of her life.
She was greatly influenced by The Great Depression and WWII. She saved anything that she thought might be useful from aluminum foil, bread bags, scraps of cloth and made many shirts from printed feed bags.
She was a homemaker, substitute schoolteacher, seamstress in addition to Loving wife, mother, sister and daughter. She believed it was her Christian duty to keep her sons busy and out of trouble. For the most part, she succeeded.
Later in life she enjoyed church, going to bluegrass festivals, traveling, playing rook with her Monday night group. Always took great pride in her appearance. She had her hair done every Friday and her nails often.
She influenced a great number of people and left a huge void in many lives and will be missed by those who knew and loved her.
Special thanks to those who came to see her when her mobility decreased and to her care givers who cared for and gave her companionship her last three years.
