Doris Comer Stokes passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, July 9th, 2025, in Lexington, North Carolina.
Doris was born on Tuesday, November 11th, 1952, to James Lloyd Comer and Ruth Evelyn Comer. A lifelong resident of Lexington, Doris was a 1970 graduate of Lexington High School and that same year, she was crowned the Christmas Queen of Lexington. After her graduation, her life was a tapestry of cherished roles and accomplishments. She was a dedicated wife to her loving husband, Carter Eugene Stokes for over 39 years, and a nurturing presence in the lives of her children and grandchildren.
Outside of her home, Doris's career was marked by her entrepreneurial spirit and leadership. She made a notable impact as part of the founding team of Walker & Associates in Welcome, NC, and served as the Managing Broker of Coldwell Banker in Lexington. Later in her life, along with Carter, she was self-employed as a real estate appraisal office manager for Welcome Associates Inc. in Lexington. Her professional life was distinguished by integrity and grace.
Doris's contributions to her community were profound. She loved Lexington and the communities of Davidson County. Doris was a member of Meadowview Presbyterian Church and also Sheets Memorial Baptist Church, both in Lexington. Doris served as Chair Lady of the Lexington Christian Women's Club for several terms over many years and was also a devoted Sunday school teacher at Sheets Memorial Baptist Church. Her faith and kindness touched the hearts of many and will be fondly remembered by all those who knew her.
Beyond her professional and community involvement and accomplishments, Doris delighted in life's simple pleasures and being outdoors to enjoy butterflies in her flower gardens and birds on her bird feeders. She adored photographing sunsets and was enthralled by the night skies. Doris loved spending time at the beach where she could often capture and photograph beautiful endings of wonderful days. Most of all, Doris was always keenly interested in the pursuits and happiness of her grandchildren. Her love for her family was unwavering and ever-present and was felt by those fortunate to call her Memaw.
Along with her parents, Doris was also proceeded in death by her son, Philip Carter Stokes. Those left to remember Doris's life and legacy are her husband, Carter Eugene Stokes, her daughter, Kameron McCullough and husband Shane, grandson, Brody McCullough and wife Madison and granddaughter, Jenna Stokes and husband Matt and brother, Roger Comer and wife Marian.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, July 14, 2025 from 12:00 noon until 1:45pm at Davidson Funeral Home with a funeral service celebrating Doris’s life to follow at 2:00pm in the Davidson Funeral Home Chapel in Lexington. Additional visiting times will be held at the home of Doris and Carter, allowing friends and family to come together in remembrance and love.
Those wishing to honor Doris’s memory are encouraged to make donations to Hospice of Davidson County.
Doris Comer Stokes will be dearly missed, but her light will continue to shine through the countless lives she touched and the friends and family she loved.
