After a lifetime of traveling countless miles, his final journey led him home.
Dossie Eugene Soles, 80, of Davidson County, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 10, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of memories, a family who loved him, and a legacy that no passing of time can erase.
Born in Whiteville, North Carolina, Eugene was the son of the late Dossie and Mildred Soles (Dow). A proud U.S. Army veteran, he honorably served his country during the Vietnam era. Following his military service, he spent much of his life as a long-haul truck driver, traveling countless miles across the country.
But for a man who spent so much of his life on the road, his favorite destination was always home.
Eugene found happiness in life's simple pleasures. He loved Christmas music, sending and receiving Christmas cards, and sitting on his porch watching the birds. He often said he was perfectly content to sit and "watch the grass grow." After a lifetime on the road, he understood that sometimes the greatest happiness is found in simply being where you belong.
Eugene was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Sue "Suzie" Soles (Dillon); his parents, Dossie and Mildred Soles; daughters, Wanda Lowman and Angela Soles; brothers, Jesse Soles, Terry Soles, and Robert Soles; and sisters, Elizabeth Fountain and Peggy Fox.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Peggy Jo "PJ" Crotts (Bobbie), Tonya Laine, and Eugenia Soles (Robin); brothers, Franklin Soles and Tommy Soles; sisters, Janet Price and Janice Tucker; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service with military honors will be held Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Holly Hill Cemetery in Thomasville, NC. The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 14, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Davidson Funeral Home, 858 Hickory Tree Road, Winston-Salem, NC.
Though his chair may now sit empty, his love and the memories he leaves behind will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
For Eugene, the long road has finally come to an end. No more miles to travel, no more schedules to keep.
Just a quiet place to rest, a peaceful view, and all the time in the world to watch the grass grow.
Rest easy, Eugene. You're home now.
