Dr. David Clark Smith, age 95, a resident of Piedmont Crossing, and former resident of Lexington passed away Sunday afternoon at Hinkle Hospice House.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday at First United Methodist Church where he was a member with Revs. Kelly Groce and Jeremy Troxler officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service and at other times at the home of his son, Clark Smith.
Dr. Smith, a life-long resident was born October 9, 1918 in Davidson County, to Samuel Jones and Pearl Hepler Smith. He was a graduate of Lexington High School Class of 1936; Wake Forest College in 1940 where he was in the Marching Band and the Kappa Sigma Fraternity; Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest College-1943-M.D.and the Phi Chi Fraternity; North Carolina Baptist Hospital- internship and residency in Internal Medicine 1946-1948 and licensed as a medical doctor in NC in 1944. He set up his practice of general medicine in Lexington in 1948 as sole practitioner and made house calls until he closed his practice 1983.He served on medical staff of Lexington Memorial Hospital-1948-1983 and also served as Chief of Staff; Past President of Davidson County Medical society, Davidson County Mental Health Association; North Carolina Medical society-1948-1983 where he was a life member and inducted into the 50 year club-1994; co-founder/co-owner and President, 50 plus years of Community Medical Center and Community Drug Store and was co-founder/co-owner and President of The Haven (first nursing home in Davidson County). He served the city of Lexington, serving on the Planning and Zoning Board from 1961-1967 and was chairman four years; was a charter member of Lexington Chamber of Commerce; co-founder of Hospice of Davidson County; co-founder of Hillside Swim Club and member of Davidson County Historical Association; at First Methodist he was a member of The Spruill Co-ed class and had served on the Administrative Board; a member of Lexington Rotary Club where he served as President-1961-1962 and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He served his country in the US Army from 1944-1946 during World War II as Medical Officer in U.S. Army Medical Corps-Captain in Pathology and was stationed in Fort Bragg, NC, Carlyle PA, Fort Deven, MA and Augusta, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 67 years Margaret Spruill Smith.
Surviving are his daughter, Vaughan Smith Long of Greensboro; son, D. Clark Smith, Jr.(fiancee’ Abby Bowman) of Lexington; grandchildren, Scott D. Long (Lauren) of Greensboro, Margaret Long Troxler (Jeremy) of Spruce Pine, David C. Smith, III of New York, Alden H. Smith of Charlotte and Robert S. Smith of Raleigh, NC.; great-grandchildren, Bella, Gabe and Roman Long, Ada and Della Troxler.
