Dr. Robert Team

March 4, 1928 — October 14, 2011

Dr. Robert (Bob) Alston Team, 83, of Lexington joined his beloved wife in the presence of their Heavenly Father on Friday, October 14, 2011 when he passed away peacefully in his home. Affectionately called Doc by his family and community, his legacy will always be the love and care with which he served his patients for 50 years. Bob was born March 4, 1928 in Gastonia, North Carolina, the son of Laurel Carr Team and Adam Alston Team. He graduated from Lexington Sr. High School in 1945. Through the kindness of the Lexington community, he was able to attend, and subsequently graduate, from Wake Forest University in 1948 and Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1952. After graduation from medical school Bob interned at George Washington University, spent two years in Frankfurt, Germany in the Army Medical Corps, and completed a residency at City Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem prior to returning to Lexington to establish his practice. Out of a deep felt obligation to his hometown, Bob’s love and passion was serving his community. In addition to his practice in Family Medicine, he was a leader at First Baptist Church, serving as a youth leader, long term Sunday school teacher, and Deacon, including time as Moderator. His civic involvement included terms on the Lexington Board of Education, Lexington City Council, Lexington Planning and Zoning Board, and Lexington Utility Commission. While on the Board of Education, he was instrumental in the successful integration of the City school system. Bob was instrumental in the planning and fundraising for a new community hospital that is vitally important to the Lexington community to this day. His involvement at the hospital included a term as chief of staff and service on the Board of Directors. In retirement, his commitment to the community continued as a weekly volunteer at Davidson County Medical Ministries, service to Hospice of Davidson County, and as a mentor in the local school system. He was a long term member of the Kiwanis Club and Davidson County Medical Society. Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Ferrell Team of 57 years, with whom he shared a deep commitment to their family. Surviving are the children: Robert Alston Team, Jr. and wife Katherine Forehand Team; Nancy Lynn Team: David O’Brian Team and wife Kathleen Kyle Team; Anne Team Kelly and husband Melvin Bookman Kelly, Jr.; and Adam Carr Team and wife Sue-Ellen Yeatts Team. In addition to his wife and children, Doc also loved his grandchildren: Robert Alston Team, III and wife Courtney Piribek Team; Alexander Coleman Team and wife Sarah Simons Team; Jordan Elizabeth Team; David O’Brian Team, Jr.; Elinor Carr Kelly; and Samuel Henderson Kelly. He is also survived by a nephew, Joseph Belvin Hornbuckle, Jr., and a niece, Elaine Hornbuckle Herschelman, the children of Laurel Ruth Team Hornbuckle and Joseph Belvin Hornbuckle of Lexington, both of whom preceded him in death. The family will visit with friends on Monday, October 17th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church in Lexington. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 18th in the church sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dr. Robert A. Team Scholarship Fund, Inc. c/o Bill McMurray, Bank of North Carolina, 115 East Center Street, Lexington, NC 27292, which provides scholarship assistance to deserving Davidson County students pursuing a career in health care.
