Edith Leonard Koonts

Apr 14, 1933 — Oct 20, 2026

Edith Leonard Koonts of Happy Hill Road, Lexington, North Carolina, affectionately known as Mamaw, Mamaw Patty, Aunt Nee and Aunt Edie, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2026 at the age of 93. With a life defined by devotion to her loved ones, a bright and industrious spirit, and an unwavering love for the Lord, she was a light to all blessed by her presence.

Growing up on the family farm in Reeds, Edith learned the value of hard work early, helping raise strawberries, watermelons, cantaloupes, and tobacco. As a young mother, she worked for a local sock factory, operating a knitting machine from the back room of her house. She went on to dedicate decades of service to the Tax Department at the Davidson County Courthouse and Dotsy Michael’s tax service, eventually running her own tax preparation business from home, well into her later years.

Edith embraced both simple pleasures and a spirited sense of adventure. Alongside her husband, RC, she traveled from the glaciers of Alaska to the beaches of the Caribbean. Some of her favorite traditions were camping at High Rock Lake and yearly mountain trips with extended family to hunt gemstones, eat together and sit around the fire.

A longtime member of Reeds Baptist Church, Edith placed her faith in God above all. Displaying the fruits of the Spirit in both her words and actions, she served on numerous committees and found deep comfort in gospel music, hymns, and fellowship. She volunteered for years with Meals on Wheels and was famous for her homemade pound cake at church potlucks and family gatherings.

At home, she delighted in caring for her family, as well as reading, crocheting, working crosswords, watching NASCAR, tending to her gardens, and displaying her cherished collections of elephants and gnomes.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh F. Leonard and Grace Michael Leonard; her beloved husband, RC Koonts; her youngest son, Danny Koonts; her brother, Lindsay Leonard; and her sister, Virginia Koontz.

Edith is survived by her sons, Cliff (Donna) and Craig (Cathy); her grandchildren, Jaime Davis (Wesley), Matthew (Kim), Kristen (Frankie), Jessica Ragan, Kelli Wilkinson (Mark), Jason, and Josh (Janet); her precious great-grandchildren, Amber, Matt (Avery), Chance, Tyler, Jackson, Chesney, Jayce, Grace, Hannah, Adam, Sawyer, Saylor, Henry, Tucker, Oakley and Luna; and a large circle of extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at Reeds Baptist Church (180 Reeds Baptist Church Rd, Lexington, NC 27295), with visitation preceding from1:00 to 2:00 PM.
