Edna Ruth Phillips McCrary, 88, of Lexington, died Thursday, November 3, 2011, at Hinkle Hospice House.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday, November 6, 2011, at Center United Methodist Churchwith the Rev. Dr. Stephen Pillsbury officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, November 5, 2011, at Davidson Funeral Home.
Mrs. McCrary was born March 5, 1923, in Davidson County to Orville L. and Jane Craver Phillips. A dedicated and active member of Center United Methodist Church where she held many offices during her lifetime, she served as president of the Center United Methodist Women and was awarded a UMW Lifetime Membership by Center United Methodist Women. She was also a member of Village Home and Garden Club where she held many offices and was awarded Lifetime Membership by club members. She delivered Meals on Wheels for many years in Northwest Davidson County until her health started to decline in 2009 and volunteered for many charitable organizations throughout her life. She was married to Norman (Bud) McCrary, Jr. for 50 years before his death on December 7, 1992. Also preceding her in death were her parents; and her brothers, Holland, Odell and Gilbert Phillips.
Surviving are daughter, Judy McCrary Sowers and husband, Jimmy; grandsons Jonathan W. Sowers and wife, Cherrill, and David C. Sowers and wife, Regenia; two great-grandsons Nathan Wilson and Joey White; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dermont and Barbara McCrary, and sisters-in-law, Goldia McCrary and Frances Phillips; dedicated cousins Nannie Roberts and Floyd Freedle; and devoted niece Ruby Blackmon in addition to numerous other loving and caring cousins, nieces and nephews.
A very heartfelt thank you to Pat Simmons, who cared for her with so much love and compassion; and Carolyn Brown, a special cherished friend of 30 some years whose weekly visits she looked so forward to and meant so much to her; also a very special thank you to the excellent staff of Hospice of Davidson County for the wonderful, loving care given to the McCrary family.
