Elbert Lee “J.R.” Akers Jr., age 59, a resident of Peggy Lane, Lexington, NC died Saturday, December 19, 2009 at Hinkle Hospice House after an extended illness.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Monday December 21, 2009 at Thomasville Church of God with the Rev. Ken Barnett and Preacher Clyde Akers. Burial will follow in the Forest Hill Memorial Park with Military graveside Rites.
J.R. was born June 28, 1950 in Moore County to Elbert “Jack” Akers Sr. and Sarah Blount Akers. He was a former employee of Lexington Furniture Company, served in the US Army, also organized Gospel Singings at the Edward C. Smith Civic Center and numerous churches.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Cynthia Dianne Cashatt Akers of the home; one son, Christopher Akers of Lexington; one daughter, Angie Jennings and husband Paul of Lexington; six brothers, Rev. Clyde Akers, Charlie Akers and Joe Akers and wife Beth all of Lexington, Al Akers of Charlotte, Richard Akers of Asheboro and Timmy “Jack” Akers of Myrtle Beach, SC; two sisters, Mary Brinkley and husband Preston of Mocksville, NC, Patty Chesson and husband Rick of Lexington; three grandchildren, Ashleigh Bost, Travis Bost and Austin Akers.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM Sunday, December 20, 2009 at Davidson Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home of the brother, Preacher Clyde Akers, on 317 Cedar Drive, Lexington, NC
